Copywriting and editing for northern Michigan artists and entrepreneurs

You opened your business in northern Michigan because it felt like home to you. Perhaps you were raised here or maybe you moved here to slow your life’s pace and be more connected to the lakes and woods outside your door.

But it turns out that living in such a seasonal place makes it difficult to find balance! Winters are quiet, and once you get through the bustle of the holiday season, artist markets, tourist traffic, and opportunities to showcase your work drop off until late spring. While the winter downtime is a welcome change of pace, it means that summer must be filled with a hustle that counters the sense of peace this place radiates.

Having an online presence is necessary to creating a year-round business in a seasonal vacation spot, but what artist or shop owner wants to spend their precious time writing copy or generating content?

Instead of letting your website be an afterthought, or using all of your free time to maintain it, let’s work together to tell your story in a compelling way.

From clearly communicating your product line to creating information packets for wholesalers and consumers alike, we can revamp the way people talk about you and what you create. Best of all, we can do so in a way that shows off why you love where you live and invites others to enjoy it as well.

I have worked with businesses and artists around the region to reach more customers utilizing their websites, social media, and email campaigns. I combine my background in photography, my knowledge as a business owner, and my love of northern Michigan, specifically the Traverse City region, to help you accomplish your goals.

Clients

MEL & FELL

I have worked with Mel & Fell from the start of their amazing business. These two are a force in Empire, Michigan, a small rural town with limited access to food, especially healthy food. When I began working with Mel & Fell, they were selling grab-and-go food out of a small shop I was running, with the eventual goal to offer ready-made meal deliveries to local residents. Beginning in early 2019, we worked together to populate an email list, which now boasts over 400 subscribers (which is as many year-round residents as the town of Empire claims!). We have worked together to clearly communicate their goals through weekly newsletters, website updates, and blog posts, as well as print ads for the local papers.

In the year 2021, their subscriptions increased from 280 to 431, a 54% increase in the span of one year. They average a higher open rate and lower unsubscribe rate than the industry standard, all of which has translated to a consistent increase in sales for them over time.

WANDER & GATHER

I worked with illustrator Maia Hausler of Wander & Gather to update her product descriptions on her Etsy site, a project that has infused each product description with life. Maia wanted to convey her “why” behind why she is so drawn to illustrations of the natural world in each description, knowing that this would connect her to more potential buyers. Now each page on her Etsy is filled with keywords that draw new clients in and translate into sales, all while showcasing her love for the natural world.
